The Role of Providers and the Entire Community in Breaking Intergenerational Patterns of Addiction, Dark Secrets, and Trauma with Individuals and Families

Some people can trace patterns of trauma, addiction and dark secrets in their family for four or five generations. Sad are the stories of parents who get sober and suddenly find themselves grieving the overdose death of a son or daughter and vice versa. Or families with generations of transmitted trauma and dark secrets that perpetuates the trauma and fuels addiction. 

 

In this presentation you will learn prevention, intervention and treatment strategies to help break intergenerational patterns of addictions, trauma and dark secrets in families. We will discuss the role of providers, persons in recovery, families and entire communities in breaking these patterns.  Other topics include: the unique risk and protective factors for children of parents with process addictions and substance use disorders; fetal alcohol syndrome as a risk factor and intervention strategies; the impact of siblings on the intergenerational transmission of addiction; breaking intergenerational patterns of addictions in addressing generational dark secrets and traumatic stress disorders in families.

Drug Courts:  The Impact They Have and Why We Need Them

This presentation will discuss the Madison County Drug Court; how it works, who is eligible, who makes up the interdisciplinary team, requirements of participants, benefits of the drug court and statistics for the court.

 

One Goal, Many Paths:  Multiple Styles of Recovery

Resistance occurs when counselors assume that there is only one way that clients recover. In this presentation you will learn multiple styles of addictions recovery including: total abstinence; quantum change; shifting allegiance; 12 step recovery, maturing out; partial recovery; solo recovery; rites of passages; gender styles; cultural styles; Native American Wellbriety; religious styles; harm reduction; integrated styles and dual recovery.  Emphasis will be placed upon how to help clients select a pathway recovery that works for them. Styles of recovery will be drawn from models worldwide.

Gambling:  A Devastating Dance of Destruction

Although gambling does not produce the cognitive or physical impairment (or does it) associated with alcohol or drug abuse, gambling can be just as devastating. Participants will learn, understand, define and discuss Gambling Disorder as an addiction regarding history to present, prevalence, sign and symptoms and much more.

 

Resilience:  The Biology of Stress & the Science of Hope Film Screening

'Resilience’ is a one hour documentary that delves into the science of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). The documentary reveals how toxic stress can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brain and bodies of children putting them at greater risk for disease, homelessness, prison time and early death. ‘Resilience’ chronicles a movement that is fighting back to protect children from the insidious effects of toxic stress and the dark legacy of a childhood that no child would choose.

 

Substance Use in Pregnancy:  Making an Impact Through Early Assessment, Identification, and Treatment

The presentation follows the presenter’s doctoral project “Early Assessment and Resource Provision for the Pregnant Substance User”.  The project explored the implementation of a validated screening tool in the hospital and physician’s office for early identification of substance use in pregnant women.  Women who screened positive were provided with education on the risks associated with substance use in pregnancy and a resource brochure for support and treatment options. Staff were educated and measures taken to reduce the stigma associated with substance abuse in pregnancy. The presentation reviews the project design, implementation, outcomes and implications for the community.

 

Vaping:  What You Need to Know

This presentation will give a look into the truth about vaping and the risks that are associated.  E-cigarettes were sold to us as a healthy way to quit smoking but now we know more.  Learn about vaping, the side effects, and how to stop use in this presentation because we can’t fight against it if we aren’t informed.

 

Current Drug Trends

This presentation will examine current drug trends and facts regarding narcotics use.

Changes to Cannabis Laws

The presentation will introduce cannabis and how it can be identified.  The criteria will go on to discuss side effects and impairment caused by its usage.  The majority of the presentation will consist of cannabis legislation as it pertains to DUIs, recreational vs. medical use, workplace drug testing, cannabis businesses, and legal limits for cannabis consumption.
